Sandstone walling panels with natural decorative pattern

With its natural strength and durability sandstone is most commonly used for the floor. Common colours include brown, yellow, red, grey, pink, white, and black.

Sandstone floor cleaning

In the last 30 years, we’ve cleaned and restored over thousands of floors of all kinds. At Clean-a-Carpet we specialise in cleaning and restoring stone floors, which means that we have developed appropriate and effective cleaning techniques for each different type of floor. While many commercial cleaners think that sandstone, limestone, marble and terracotta are the same, and need the same treatment, we know they aren’t.

We’re passionate about returning floors to their original beauty. When sandstone flooring is first installed, the stone has a gorgeous depth of colour. Sandstone is often a rich red or cream and may have unique natural patterning in the form of stripes or speckles. Unfortunately, if it hasn’t been sealed, sandstone can become dirty and discoloured over the years.

Sealing – the best thing you can do for your floors

Natural stones, like sandstone, are often porous which means that dirt and water can be partly absorbed by the stone. This makes the floor more likely to stain or grow dull and grubby, even if it’s cleaned regularly.

Using a professional quality sealant makes your sandstone floor non-porous, which means that any dirt, dust or spilled liquid stays on the top of the stone where it can easily be wiped off. As part of our sandstone floor rejuvenation service, we can seal sandstone floors. This is suitable for slabs and tiles, indoors and outdoors.

Why sandstone floors need professional cleaning

Sandstone is a sedimentary rock. It’s made of tiny particles of sand fused together by extreme pressure over thousands of years. The sand is typically primarily quartz, but it may contain other minerals and even bits of shell or fossils. As a result, sandstone can be damaged by inexpert cleaning. It may react with some cleaning products, leaving pitting or scuffs, or be worn away by pressure cleaning or abrasive cleaners. The damage will often be subtle – you won’t be missing chunks of your floor but it won’t look right.

At Clean-a-Carpet, we’ve been taking care of sandstone floors for over 30 years. We know how to care for the different kinds of sandstone, how to spot delicate grouting and other problem areas, and which cleaner to use for which stone. We’ve carefully selected our cleaning products so that the smells and chemicals are gone almost as soon as we are.
